Crafting Holiday Magic with Homemade Gumdrops
For many, the act of making homemade candies is the very essence of the Christmas season. There’s an undeniable magic in transforming basic ingredients into exquisite confections that bring joy to loved ones. We find immense pleasure in whipping up batches of rich fudge, ethereal divinity, and an assortment of other delightful treats. This exceptionally easy recipe for homemade gumdrops is a fantastic addition to any holiday baking tradition, guaranteed to become a new family favorite in your home as well. The simplicity of this recipe makes it a perfect entry point for aspiring candy makers, delivering impressive results with minimal effort.
Beyond its ease, this gumdrop recipe is wonderfully suited for involving children in the kitchen. Their excitement in stirring ingredients, watching the mixture thicken, and especially cutting out fun shapes, creates lasting memories. To achieve a visually stunning display, we highly recommend preparing two separate batches using contrasting colors. For Christmas, classic red and green immediately come to mind, evoking the festive spirit. However, feel free to unleash your creativity! Imagine vibrant blues and whites for a winter wonderland theme, or pastels for Easter. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to customize your gumdrops for any occasion throughout the year.

You will truly be amazed by how effortless these gumdrops are to create! The process is surprisingly straightforward, akin to preparing a simple Jell-O mold, followed by a delightful roll in granulated sugar. This simple technique yields a candy that is both incredibly delicious and satisfyingly chewy, offering a burst of fruity flavor with every bite. The texture is perfectly balanced – firm enough to hold its shape, yet tender enough to melt in your mouth. This combination of ease and exquisite taste makes homemade gumdrops a superior choice to many store-bought alternatives.
Essential Ingredients for Irresistible Gumdrops
Creating these delightful gumdrops requires only a few pantry staples, making it an accessible recipe for anyone eager to try their hand at candy making. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving the perfect flavor and texture. Here’s what you’ll need and why:
- Applesauce (No Sugar Added): This is the secret ingredient that gives these gumdrops their unique, slightly soft texture and subtle fruitiness, distinguishing them from traditional gelatin candies. Using unsweetened applesauce allows you to control the overall sweetness.
- Granulated Sugar: Essential for sweetness and structure. You’ll use a portion in the mixture and the rest for rolling the finished gumdrops, giving them their characteristic sparkly coating.
- Jell-O (6-ounce boxes): The primary source of flavor and vibrant color. Choose your favorite flavors like cherry, lime, orange, or lemon to create a variety of hues and tastes. These larger boxes provide ample flavor concentration.
- Unflavored Gelatin (½ ounce, 2 envelopes): This is crucial for setting the gumdrops and giving them their chewy, resilient texture. It works in conjunction with the Jell-O to create the perfect candy consistency.
- Lemon Juice: A small touch of lemon juice brightens the flavors and adds a slight tang, balancing the sweetness of the sugar and Jell-O.
Beyond the main ingredients, you’ll also appreciate the delightful “scraps” created during the cutting process. After you’ve carefully cut out your beautifully shaped gumdrops, gather the remaining tidbits. We love cutting these into smaller, irregular pieces, rolling them in sugar, and enjoying them as a chef’s treat! It’s a fun way to enjoy every bit of your homemade candy, and a perfect snack while you save the “prettier” shapes for thoughtful gifts.

Essential Tools for Gumdrop Success
While the ingredients are simple, having the right tools on hand will make the gumdrop-making process even smoother and more enjoyable. These items ensure your gumdrops turn out perfectly shaped and ready for gifting or enjoying:
- Small, Metal Cookie Cutters: These are indispensable for cutting out charming gumdrop shapes. Opt for metal cutters, as they provide sharper edges and are easier to clean. For the holiday season, stars, trees, gingerbread men, or bells are perfect. For other times of the year, consider hearts, flowers, or simple geometric shapes.
- 9×13 Inch Baking Dish: This standard pan size is ideal for creating a layer of gumdrop mixture that is thick enough to cut into substantial candies.
- Parchment Paper: Crucial for preventing sticking and for easy handling of the gumdrop sheet before and after cutting.
- Large Saucepan: A sturdy saucepan is needed for boiling the gumdrop mixture. Ensure it’s large enough to comfortably stir the ingredients.
- Airtight Containers: Essential for proper storage of your finished gumdrops to maintain their freshness and texture.
During the bustling holiday season, I always keep an assortment of cellophane treat bags on hand. These simple bags transform your homemade gumdrops into charming, professional-looking gifts. They truly add that extra touch of thoughtfulness and make sharing your sweet creations even more special. Imagine presenting a small bag of these colorful, homemade gumdrops to a teacher, neighbor, or host – it’s a gesture that speaks volumes.

One critical step in achieving the perfect gumdrop texture is allowing them ample time to rest. After cutting them out, the gumdrops need to sit uncovered for approximately 8 hours, or ideally overnight, before they are rolled in sugar. This crucial drying period allows them to firm up slightly and develop that signature chewy consistency, ensuring they don’t become overly sticky when stored. Make sure to factor this resting time into your preparation schedule.

Once your gumdrops have sufficiently dried and been coated in sugar, proper storage is key to maintaining their freshness. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature. This prevents them from drying out or becoming overly sticky. They make exceptional gifts for teachers, co-workers, or as part of a larger holiday treat basket. The personal touch of homemade candy is always deeply appreciated, and these gumdrops, with their vibrant colors and delightful flavors, are sure to be a hit!

Our family truly has an obsession with candy making, especially during the festive holiday season. There’s nothing quite like the aroma of homemade sweets filling the air. Homemade Gumdrops
These Homemade Gumdrops are the perfect treat to make for friends and family during the holidays! Made with just a handful of ingredients – including applesauce – these gumdrops are sure to become a holiday tradition! A Christmas favorite with our family!
Ingredients
- 2½ cups granulated sugar (divided)
- 1½ cups applesauce (no sugar added)
- 6 oz Jell-O (i.e. cherry, lime, etc.)
- ½ oz unflavored gelatin (2 envelopes)
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Coat a 9×13 baking dish thoroughly with cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, combine 2 cups of granulated sugar, applesauce, Jell-O powder, unflavored gelatin, and lemon juice. Stir all ingredients well to combine. Let the mixture stand for 1 minute to allow the gelatin to bloom.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a full boil, stirring constantly to prevent sticking and ensure even heating.
- Boil for exactly 1 minute, continuing to stir. Immediately remove from heat and carefully pour the hot mixture into the prepared 9×13 baking dish.
- Refrigerate the dish until the gelatin is completely firm. This typically takes about three hours, but leaving it overnight ensures the best consistency.
- Once firm, prepare a large cutting board by covering it with parchment paper. Lightly sprinkle the parchment paper with some of the remaining granulated sugar.
- Gently loosen the sides of the gelatin mixture from the baking dish with a spatula. Invert the entire gelatin slab onto the sugar-coated parchment paper.
- Using small, sharp metal cookie cutters, cut out your desired gumdrop shapes. For easier cutting, you can periodically dip the cookie cutters into hot water and rinse them off to prevent sticking.
- Leave the cutout gumdrops directly on the sugar-coated parchment paper for approximately 8 hours, or until they are just slightly tacky to the touch. This crucial step allows them to dry and develop their proper texture.
- Roll each dried gumdrop in the remaining granulated sugar until fully coated. Store your finished homemade gumdrops in an airtight container at room temperature.
