Essential Ingredients for Bakery Style Chocolate Chip Cookies
Crafting the perfect bakery-style chocolate chip cookie relies on a careful selection of ingredients. You’ll recognize many familiar items, but one star component you might not typically associate with cookies is cornstarch. This secret ingredient is absolutely crucial for achieving that ultra-soft, wonderfully chewy texture that defines our bakery-style cookies. It helps to tenderize the dough, preventing them from becoming too crisp and ensuring they remain beautifully soft even after cooling.
- **Unsalted Butter:** At room temperature for optimal creaming with sugars.
- **Brown Sugar:** Adds moisture, chewiness, and a deeper, molasses-rich flavor.
- **Granulated Sugar:** Contributes to crisp edges and overall sweetness.
- **Egg:** Binds ingredients, adds richness, and helps with leavening.
- **Vanilla Extract:** Essential for enhancing the overall flavor profile of the cookies. Use real vanilla for the best results.
- **All-Purpose Flour:** The structural base of the cookie. Ensure it’s spooned and leveled for accuracy.
- **Cornstarch:** Our secret weapon for superior softness and chewiness.
- **Baking Soda:** Reacts with brown sugar’s acidity to create lift and spread.
- **Salt:** Balances sweetness and enhances all the other flavors.
- **Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips:** The classic choice for that comforting chocolate taste.
- **M&Ms:** Adds festive color, a delightful candy crunch, and extra chocolatey goodness, especially for Easter!
Going back to 2015, when I first shared a variation of this recipe, I credited my sister, Melissa, as the baking expert in our family. She was the one who brilliantly suggested freezing the cookie dough to achieve the extra thick, perfectly chewy cookie I was striving for. And she was absolutely right!
Freezing the dough accomplishes all the benefits of chilling dough and more. It allows the butter to solidify thoroughly, which prevents excessive spreading during baking, resulting in taller, thicker cookies. Moreover, the flavors have ample time to meld and deepen, creating a more complex and satisfying taste experience. This technique ensures that each cookie bakes up with that coveted bakery-style height and an incredibly soft, chewy texture – truly perfection!
Unlock Baking Success: Tips for the BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies
Achieving that perfect, professional-looking, and tasting cookie is easier than you think with a few simple techniques. These tips are tried and true, guaranteeing a batch of chocolate chip cookies that will impress everyone.
- Utilize a Cookie Dough Scoop: This small tool makes a huge difference. Using a cookie dough scoop ensures that all your cookies are uniform in size. This not only makes for a more aesthetically pleasing presentation but, more importantly, guarantees that every cookie bakes evenly. No more burnt edges on small cookies while larger ones are still raw!
- Prioritize Quality Ingredients: When it comes to baking, the quality of your ingredients truly shines through in the final product. Invest in good quality unsalted butter, fresh eggs, and, critically, real vanilla extract. Imitation vanilla can leave a harsh aftertaste, whereas pure vanilla extract adds a depth of flavor that is simply unmatched and elevates your cookies from good to extraordinary.
- Never Skip Freezing the Dough: This step is non-negotiable for bakery-style cookies. Freezing the dough for at least an hour (or even overnight) does two vital things. Firstly, it allows the flavors of the ingredients to fully meld and intensify, creating a richer taste. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it thoroughly chills the butter. This prevents the cookies from spreading too quickly or too much in the oven, resulting in those desirable thick, chewy centers and slightly crispy edges.
- Avoid Overbaking at All Costs: This is a common pitfall for many bakers. It’s incredibly tempting to let the cookies bake until they look perfectly golden and “done.” However, for soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies, you want them to appear slightly underbaked in the center when you remove them from the oven. The residual heat from the baking sheet will continue to cook them as they cool. Overbaking will lead to dry, crunchy cookies, which, while still edible, lack the desired soft, gooey texture we’re aiming for.
- Adorn with Extra M&Ms and Chocolate Chips: For that ultimate “wow factor” and professional bakery finish, save a handful of M&Ms and chocolate chips. Immediately after removing the hot cookies from the oven, gently press these extra candies and chips onto the tops of the cookies. This makes them visually stunning, signaling the deliciousness within, and lets your guests know exactly what kind of delightful treat they’re about to enjoy.
Achieving Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies: A Personal Quest
The “perfect” chocolate chip cookie is truly a personal preference, a subjective masterpiece unique to each individual. For me, and for this recipe, perfection means soft and endlessly chewy, ooey and gooey, tender to the bite, and absolutely brimming with chocolate. These cookies don’t just meet those expectations; they surpass them, delivering an experience that delights all the senses.
What makes this recipe truly stand out is its incredible adaptability. While today we’ve embraced the festive charm of Easter with colorful M&Ms, the base recipe is a blank canvas for your creativity. Feel free to omit the M&Ms for a classic, pure chocolate chip experience. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, mix in some chopped nuts for added crunch, or peanut butter chips for a different flavor profile. The possibilities are endless! The beauty of baking lies in making a recipe your own, experimenting with flavors and textures to suit your taste. That’s precisely what makes the process so enjoyable and rewarding.
Essential Tools You Need To Make the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies
Having the right tools can make all the difference in your baking journey, especially when striving for consistent, high-quality results like these bakery-style chocolate chip cookies. Here are a few indispensable items that every baker should consider having on hand:
- A good cookie sheet: A sturdy, light-colored baking sheet will help ensure even browning and prevent the bottoms of your cookies from burning.
- Silicone whisks: These are gentle on your mixing bowls and perfect for whisking dry ingredients or incorporating wet ones without scratching surfaces.
- A precise measuring cup set: Accuracy is key in baking, and a reliable set of measuring cups ensures you get the exact proportions every time.
- A cookie scoop: As mentioned in our tips, this tool is invaluable for creating uniform cookie dough balls, leading to evenly baked and professional-looking cookies.
- Silpat baking mats or parchment paper: These non-stick surfaces prevent cookies from sticking, promote even baking, and make cleanup a breeze.
We absolutely adore these Easter chocolate chip cookies! They’re truly perfect for celebrating the holiday with their vibrant colors and delightful flavors. But please, don’t limit their enjoyment to just Easter. This recipe is so good, it deserves to be made and savored all year long!

Author: Trish – Mom On Timeout
Ingredients
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 2 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup M&Ms, plus more for topping if desired
Instructions
- Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the room temperature butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and M&Ms until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Scoop out about 2 tablespoons of cookie dough for each cookie and roll into smooth balls. Using a cookie scoop helps to ensure uniform size, which promotes even baking.
- Place the cookie dough balls on the prepared baking sheet. If desired, gently press a few extra M&Ms onto the top of each cookie for a prettier finish.
- Cover the cookie dough balls with plastic wrap and freeze for at least one hour, or ideally, overnight. If freezing overnight, let the cookie dough balls sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before baking. (You can also transfer frozen dough balls to a freezer-safe ziploc bag and bake them as needed, straight from the freezer with an extra minute or two of bake time).
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the frozen cookie dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving adequate space between them. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The cookies will appear slightly under-baked in the center, which is exactly what you want for a soft, chewy texture. Gently press additional candies and chocolate chips into the top of the hot cookies if desired, for a bakery-style appearance.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week to maintain their freshness and chewiness.
