Essential Ingredients for Fluffy Sweet Potato Biscuits
Crafting these delectable sweet potato biscuits is simpler than you might think. This recipe is a delightful modification of my classic homemade biscuit recipe, incorporating the natural sweetness and moist texture of mashed sweet potatoes. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving that perfect, melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.
- Mashed Sweet Potatoes: The star of the show! Ensure they are well-mashed and cooled to integrate smoothly into the dough. They provide natural sweetness, moisture, and that beautiful orange hue.
- Butter: For richness and flavor. Melted butter, as used in this recipe, contributes to a tender crumb and ease of mixing.
- Buttermilk: The secret to light and tangy biscuits. Buttermilk reacts with the baking soda to create lift, resulting in an airy texture.
- All-Purpose Flour: The foundational dry ingredient, providing structure to the biscuits.
- Baking Powder & Baking Soda: These leavening agents work in harmony to give the biscuits their characteristic rise and fluffiness. Baking soda specifically reacts with the acid in buttermilk.
- Salt: Essential for balancing the sweetness and enhancing the overall flavor profile.
- Sugar: A touch of sugar further accentuates the sweet potato flavor and aids in browning.
Selecting quality ingredients is key to achieving the best results. Fresh sweet potatoes, good quality butter, and fresh buttermilk will elevate the taste and texture of your homemade biscuits significantly.

Freezing and Storing Sweet Potato Biscuits for Convenience
One of the many benefits of making a batch of these delightful sweet potato biscuits is how well they freeze. This makes them perfect for meal prepping or ensuring you always have a homemade treat on hand. You can freeze them either before or after baking, depending on your preference and schedule.
To Freeze Biscuits Before Baking:
Freezing raw biscuit dough allows for fresh-baked biscuits anytime. Simply follow these steps:
- Prepare the biscuit dough according to the recipe instructions, up until the point where the biscuits are cut out.
- Arrange the raw biscuit rounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they don’t touch.
- Flash freeze them for approximately 1 hour, or until they are solid. This prevents them from sticking together when stored.
- Once frozen solid, transfer the biscuits to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Label with the date.
- Store in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
- When ready to bake, place the frozen biscuits directly on a prepared baking sheet (no need to thaw). Add an additional 4 to 6 minutes to the total baking time, or until golden brown and cooked through.
To Freeze Biscuits After Baking:
If you have leftover baked biscuits or prefer to bake a large batch in advance, freezing them after baking is also an excellent option:
- Bake the sweet potato biscuits as per the recipe instructions.
- Allow the biscuits to cool completely to room temperature on a wire rack. This is crucial to prevent condensation and ice crystals from forming in the freezer, which can make them soggy.
- Once cooled, place the biscuits in a single layer in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. For best results, you can individually wrap them in plastic wrap before placing them in the bag.
- Store in the freezer for up to 2 months.
To Reheat Frozen Biscuits:
Whether baked or unbaked, reheating is simple:
- Baked Biscuits: Thaw in the microwave on medium heat in 15-second intervals until warm and soft. Alternatively, bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 10-15 minutes, or until thoroughly warmed.
- Unbaked Biscuits (from frozen): Place on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 19-26 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Shelf Life and Storage of Sweet Potato Biscuits
Proper storage ensures your sweet potato biscuits stay fresh and delicious for as long as possible:
- Room Temperature: Freshly baked sweet potato biscuits can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days. To keep them from drying out, place them in an airtight container or cover them loosely with plastic wrap or foil.
- Refrigeration: For a slightly longer shelf life, you can refrigerate the biscuits for up to 4 days. Again, store them in an airtight container to maintain their moisture and flavor. Gently warm them before serving for the best experience.

Melted Butter vs. Cold Butter: The Biscuit Debate
The choice between melted and cold butter is a common point of discussion in the world of biscuit making, and each method yields a distinct texture. While my traditional biscuit recipe often calls for cold butter to achieve maximum flakiness, this particular buttermilk sweet potato biscuit recipe ingeniously uses melted butter. This not only simplifies the process but also contributes to a wonderfully tender and less crumbly biscuit, allowing the sweet potato flavor to shine through beautifully.
However, if your heart desires that classic, incredibly flaky biscuit texture, you absolutely can adapt this recipe to use cold butter. The key difference lies in how the butter interacts with the flour. When using cold butter, the small pieces of butter create steam pockets during baking, which separate the dough into distinct, flaky layers. Here are some tips if you opt for the cold butter method:
- Cutting the Butter: Start by cutting very cold butter into small, pea-sized pieces. You can even refrigerate or freeze these pieces briefly before incorporating them into the flour mixture.
- Pastry Cutter Method: Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work the cold butter into the flour mixture. The goal is to distribute the butter evenly until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Avoid overworking the dough, as this can melt the butter and toughen the biscuits.
- Grating Frozen Butter: A fantastic alternative is to grate frozen butter directly into the flour mixture using a box grater. This creates tiny flakes of butter that are easily incorporated and contribute to excellent flakiness. Gently stir it in with a fork.
- Keep it Cold: To prevent the butter from melting, ensure all your ingredients, especially the buttermilk, are as cold as possible. This maintains the integrity of the butter pieces and maximizes flakiness.
Both methods result in delicious biscuits; the choice depends purely on your preferred texture. For a quick and tender biscuit, melted butter is your friend. For a more traditional, flaky bite, cold butter is the way to go, albeit with a bit more technique involved.

How to Make Homemade Sweet Potato Biscuits
Get ready to bake a batch of the most delicious, tender, and fluffy sweet potato biscuits. This recipe is straightforward, yielding a dozen perfect biscuits that will disappear quickly from your table.
Sweet Potato Biscuits
These amazing Sweet Potato Biscuits are light, fluffy and the perfect addition to your menu! Incredibly easy to make, these southern style biscuits are extra tender and delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups baked sweet potatoes, cooled and mashed well
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 5 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat and set it aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the well-mashed sweet potatoes, melted butter, and buttermilk. Whisk these wet ingredients together until they are thoroughly combined and smooth.
- To the wet mixture, add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Stir gently with a spoon or spatula just until the dry ingredients are incorporated and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough biscuits.
- Turn the sticky dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Sprinkle a bit more flour on top of the dough to prevent sticking.
- Gently knead the dough about 10 times. Add additional flour sparingly, only as necessary, to prevent excessive stickiness. The dough should still be soft and manageable.
- Roll the dough out to an even thickness of about 3/4-inch. Use a round biscuit cutter (or a floured glass rim) to cut out individual biscuits. Avoid twisting the cutter, as this can seal the edges and prevent a good rise.
- Carefully place the cut biscuits onto your prepared baking sheet. Arrange them so they are just barely touching for softer sides, or spaced apart for crispier edges.
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through and fluffy.
- Serve your warm, homemade sweet potato biscuits immediately and enjoy!
