Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie: Your Ultimate Fall Dessert Recipe
There are few desserts as comforting and universally loved as apple pie. The irresistible aroma of apples baking with cinnamon and nutmeg is enough to brighten any day, and for me, it truly “rocks my world.” But why settle for an ordinary apple pie when you can elevate it to an extraordinary deep-dish Dutch apple pie, complete with a buttery, sweet streusel topping? This isn’t just a dessert; it’s an experience, especially as the crisp autumn air rolls in.
Just a few weeks ago, I teased you all with a glimpse of this magnificent pie while sharing my highly acclaimed recipe for homemade apple pie filling. If you haven’t tried that filling yet, trust me, it’s an absolute game-changer. Many of you were quick to point out my oversight – sharing the filling without the full pie recipe! My apologies for the delay, but your patience is about to be deliciously rewarded. Today, I’m thrilled to unveil the complete, step-by-step guide to crafting this incredible Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie. You’re welcome!

Why a Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie is Superior
When it comes to apple pie, I believe bigger is definitely better. A deep dish pie allows for a generous amount of that luscious apple filling, ensuring every bite is bursting with flavor. But the “Dutch” part is where it gets truly special. Unlike traditional apple pies with a double crust, Dutch apple pie features an open top covered in a crumbly, buttery streusel. This provides a delightful textural contrast – soft, tender apples beneath a sweet, crunchy crown. And let’s not forget the warming spices that permeate every layer, making it the quintessential fall treat.
The Secret Weapon: A Springform Pan
For this deep-dish wonder, I highly recommend using a springform pan. Why? Because it simplifies the pie-making process considerably and yields stunning results. One of the biggest challenges with traditional pie plates is achieving clean, intact slices, especially with a deep, loaded pie. A springform pan eliminates the dreaded crumbly crust and messy slices, allowing you to easily remove the pie ring and present a perfectly shaped pie every single time. Moreover, the pan itself offers a protective barrier to the crust, helping to prevent it from over-browning. The edges stay beautifully golden, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and a delightful texture. Just look at how gorgeous that pie is in its perfect form!

Achieving Pie Perfection: My Favorite Tricks
Over the years, I’ve gathered a couple of foolproof tricks that guarantee the best possible pie experience. These might seem a little detail-oriented, but trust me, they make all the difference in achieving a perfectly structured and delightful pie.
1. The Cornstarch Thickening Method
One of my top tips involves whisking cornstarch with a portion of the liquid drained from the apple filling. This might sound minor, but it’s crucial for achieving a firm, luscious filling that holds its shape beautifully when sliced. No one wants a runny, messy pie! This method ensures that each slice of your deep-dish apple pie stands tall and proud, showcasing its abundant filling without collapsing. It’s all about maintaining that picture-perfect presentation, which, I admit, is something I can be a little “OCD” about when it comes to pies. And it works completely in your favor!

2. The Egg White Barrier for a Crispy Crust
My second essential trick is to lightly brush the bottom and sides of your pie crust with a beaten egg white before adding the apple filling. This creates a thin, protective barrier that prevents the crust from absorbing moisture from the juicy apples, keeping it wonderfully crisp and flaky, not soggy. A soggy bottom crust is the nemesis of any pie lover, and this simple step effectively combats it. Again, this contributes to those nice, clean slices that make your homemade pie look as professional as it tastes.

Serving Your Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie Masterpiece
While you certainly have the freedom to serve this pie however you wish, my husband would argue that it’s practically a culinary crime to enjoy apple pie without a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. And he’s right! The cold, creamy ice cream melting into the warm, spiced apple filling and crunchy streusel is an experience unparalleled. Add a luscious drizzle of homemade caramel sauce, and you’ve created a dessert that is nothing short of heavenly. It’s the ultimate combination of textures and flavors, making every bite an absolute delight. You might find yourself going back for seconds, or even thirds!

Ingredients
Pie Crust
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 8 tbsp butter, cold and cubed
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3-4 tbsp ice water
- 1 egg white, lightly beaten
Apple Pie Filling
- 6 cups homemade apple pie filling
- 3 tbsp corn starch
Streusel Topping
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup oats
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup pecan halves
- 6 tbsp cold butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
For the Pie Crust:
- Combine flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse a few times to ensure they are well mixed.
- Add the very cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Pulse repeatedly until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
- Add 2 tablespoons of ice water and pulse a few times to incorporate the water into the dough.
- Add another tablespoon of ice water and continue pulsing until the dough begins to come together and form a ball. If the dough still appears dry and crumbly, add an additional tablespoon of water, one at a time, pulsing after each addition until a cohesive dough ball forms.
- Carefully roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a circle approximately 1/8-inch thick and 12 inches in diameter.
- Fold the rolled dough into quarters and gently transfer it into a 9-inch springform pan.
- Unfold the crust carefully and press it evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the pan, extending about 2 inches high. If desired, crimp the edges decoratively with a fork.
- Place the prepared crust in the freezer (or refrigerator) for at least 30 minutes while you prepare the filling and streusel topping. This chilling step is crucial for a flaky crust.
For the Apple Pie Filling:
- Drain approximately 1/2 cup of liquid from your prepared apple pie filling.
- In a large bowl, whisk the drained liquid together with the cornstarch until the mixture is smooth and lump-free. This creates a thickening slurry.
- Add the remaining apple pie filling to the bowl and gently stir to combine it with the cornstarch mixture, ensuring all apples are lightly coated.
- Set the filling aside.
For the Streusel Topping:
- Combine all of the streusel ingredients (flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oats, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, salt, pecan halves, and cold butter pieces) in a food processor.
- Pulse until the mixture forms coarse crumbs, with the largest pieces being about the size of a pea or smaller. Avoid over-processing; you want a crumbly texture.
- Set the streusel topping aside.
Assembly and Baking:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Remove the chilled pie crust from the freezer. Lightly brush the bottom and sides of the crust with the beaten egg white. This crucial step prevents the crust from becoming soggy due to the fruit filling.
- Gently pour the prepared apple pie filling into the egg white-brushed crust, spreading it evenly.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, remove the pie from the oven. Carefully and evenly spread the streusel topping over the top of the hot apple filling.
- Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Return the pie to the oven and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the streusel topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
- Once baked, allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack before attempting to remove it from the springform pan. This cooling period is essential for the filling to set properly.
- Serve your Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie warm, preferably with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of homemade caramel topping, if desired. Enjoy every delicious bite!
