Choosing Your Perfect Sausage: Versatility is Key!

One of the best aspects of this recipe is its incredible versatility. You can truly customize it to suit your taste and the preferences of your guests. Whether you’re a fan of the robust flavor of Polish sausages, the savory kick of bratwursts, or a cheesy delight like Johnsonville Beddar with Cheddar (a personal favorite in our home!), this recipe accommodates them all. Feel free to use classic hot dogs for a simpler, universally loved option, or experiment with gourmet chicken or turkey sausages for a lighter touch. The key is to choose fully cooked sausages, which simplifies the preparation and ensures they’re ready to enjoy after the dough bakes to perfection.

Beyond the type of sausage, consider the size. Standard hot dogs or smaller sausages work wonderfully, providing perfect individual portions. For larger gatherings, preparing a variety of sausages can add an exciting element to your spread, inviting guests to try different flavors. This flexibility makes these homemade sausage wraps adaptable for any occasion and any palate.

Effortless Entertaining: Prepare Ahead for Stress-Free Hosting

Hosting a party can be hectic, but with these Spiral-Wrapped Sausages, you can breathe easy. They are incredibly forgiving and perfect for making ahead of time. You can prepare them a few hours before your guests arrive and keep them warm in a low oven. This strategy keeps them fresh and delicious, ready to serve as soon as hunger strikes. Imagine: no last-minute scrambling in the kitchen while your guests are enjoying themselves!

For even greater convenience, these sausages freeze beautifully. After baking, simply wrap them tightly in foil and store them in the freezer for up to three weeks. When you’re ready to serve, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes, or pop them in the microwave for about 45 seconds per sausage until heated through. This make-ahead option is a game-changer for busy hosts, allowing you to enjoy your own party to the fullest. They are truly the ultimate easy party food.

The Art of Baking with Yeast: Crafting Perfect Dough

The secret to these delightful sausage twists lies in the soft, slightly sweet yeast dough. Working with yeast might seem intimidating to some, but it’s a truly rewarding experience, and with the right ingredients, it’s remarkably simple. For years, I’ve relied on Fleischmann’s Yeast in my kitchen, a brand trusted for its consistent quality since 1868. Their RapidRise yeast makes the process quick and foolproof, allowing the dough to rise beautifully and achieve that perfect texture. Whether you use jars for frequent baking or the convenient individual packets (remember, one envelope equals 2 1/4 teaspoons), Fleischmann’s ensures reliable results every time.

There’s a unique joy in baking from scratch, especially when you see the dough transform before and after a rise. The aroma that fills your kitchen is simply heavenly! It’s a simple pleasure that brings smiles to everyone’s faces, especially my boys who get so excited watching the dough magically expand. Using quality ingredients, particularly for party food, is non-negotiable. You want to serve your guests something truly outstanding, and a good yeast makes all the difference in achieving that light, fluffy, and flavorful dough that perfectly complements the savory sausages. This dough-wrapped sausage recipe is an excellent way to experience the fun of yeast baking.

Creating the spirals is surprisingly easy. Once your dough is ready and has rested, roll it out into a rectangle and use a pizza wheel or sharp knife to cut it into even strips. Don’t worry about perfectly straight lines; a little rustic charm adds to their homemade appeal! Even with a few enthusiastic helpers, this step is fun and quick. The strips are then wrapped around each sausage, creating that signature spiral effect that gives these snacks their unique charm.

This recipe yields 12 delicious sausages, but it can easily be doubled or even tripled to accommodate larger gatherings. It’s truly a scalable recipe, making it perfect for intimate family dinners or grand Super Bowl bashes. Always remember to allow enough space between the sausages on the baking sheet for even cooking and optimal browning.

The Perfect Companion: A Simple Dipping Sauce

While these spiral-wrapped hot dogs are fantastic on their own, a complementary dipping sauce elevates them to another level. Our recipe includes an incredibly easy two-ingredient dipping sauce that pairs perfectly: yellow mustard and dill pickle relish. The tanginess of the mustard combined with the briny crunch of the relish creates a vibrant flavor that cuts through the richness of the sausage and dough. This simple sauce is a crowd-pleaser and adds a fresh, zesty finish to each bite.

Feeling adventurous? You could also offer a variety of dipping options to cater to diverse tastes. Think honey mustard, tangy BBQ sauce, a spicy sriracha mayo, or even a creamy ranch dressing. Providing choices encourages guests to experiment and enjoy these fun appetizers even more. No matter what you choose, the dipping sauce is the perfect accompaniment to these delightful kid-friendly sausage snacks.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 envelope Fleischmann’s® RapidRise Yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Mazola® Vegetable Plus! Oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1-1/4 to 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 12 polish sausages (brats, or any other fully cooked sausage/dog)
  • 12 popsicle sticks

Dipping sauce

  • 1/3 cup yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp dill pickle relish (lightly drained)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixer bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, Fleischmann’s® RapidRise Yeast, salt, and brown sugar. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl or small saucepan, combine the cottage cheese, water, and Mazola® Vegetable Plus! Oil. Heat this mixture until it is very warm, reaching a temperature between 120°F to 130°F. (Do not overheat, as it can kill the yeast.)
  3. Pour the warm liquid mixture into the mixer bowl with the flour and yeast. Add the egg. Beat the mixture on medium speed for 3 minutes until it forms a cohesive batter.
  4. Add 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour to the batter and beat for an additional 1 minute. Gradually add enough of the remaining all-purpose flour, a little at a time, until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for 6 to 8 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the kneaded dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 10 minutes. This resting period allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll.
  6. After resting, roll the dough into a 12 x 10-inch rectangle. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into twelve 1-inch wide strips, each approximately 10 inches long. Carefully wrap one strip of dough around each sausage in a spiral fashion, gently tucking the ends underneath the sausage to secure them.
  7. Place the spiral-wrapped sausages on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased. Ensure there is enough space between each sausage for even cooking.
  8. Cover the baking sheet lightly with a clean kitchen towel and let the sausages rise for 20 minutes, or until they appear puffy. (The dough will not double in size, but will noticeably increase in volume.)
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the sausages for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dough is beautifully golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Remove from the oven. While still warm, carefully insert a popsicle stick into one end of each spiral-wrapped sausage. Serve immediately with the prepared dipping sauce.
  11. **For the Dipping Sauce:** In a small bowl, combine the yellow mustard and lightly drained dill pickle relish. Stir well to mix.
  12. **Recipe Tip for Freezing:** These spiral-wrapped sausages can be frozen after baking for future enjoyment. To freeze, simply wrap each cooled sausage tightly in aluminum foil, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 weeks. To reheat, thaw the frozen sausages in the refrigerator overnight. Then, either warm them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10 to 15 minutes until heated through, or microwave each sausage individually for about 45 seconds until warm.
