A Memorable Journey to the Heart of Pillsbury
Last week, I had the incredible privilege of traveling to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for an unforgettable experience at the General Mills Headquarters. Receiving the invitation from Pillsbury for their annual Holiday Bloggers event filled me with immense excitement. The anticipation grew even stronger as I learned about the remarkable group of fellow food enthusiasts who would be joining me.

The entire trip was a whirlwind of activity, packed with engaging sessions, creative challenges, and wonderful conversations from start to finish. It was a truly enriching experience that highlighted the passion and expertise behind the beloved Pillsbury brand. What made the journey even more special was the opportunity to connect with an incredible community of bloggers.
I had an absolute blast spending time with talented individuals like Ashley, Kate, Joan, Heather, Jocelyn, Lisa, Julie, Zainab, Tonia, Emily, Shawn, Sheryl, Dana, Jocelyn, and Gerry. It was truly amazing how effortlessly we all connected. There was an instant sense of camaraderie and friendship that was both surprising and wonderfully heartwarming. This group of bloggers is genuinely fantastic, and I’m honored and thrilled to now count them all as friends.

From Test Kitchens to Creative Inspiration
The event kicked off with an exquisite dinner on Thursday night, setting a perfect tone for the days ahead. The following morning, after a delicious breakfast, we were energized and ready to dive into the day’s activities. The group was thoughtfully split into two teams. One team ventured to the professional photography studio to learn styling and visual storytelling, while my team headed straight to the renowned Pillsbury test kitchens, eager to unleash our culinary creativity.

In the test kitchens, we had the opportunity to craft a variety of appetizers and festive treats, including delightful Gingerbread-Turtle Thumbprint Cookies. I was paired with my good friend, Ashley, and we had an absolute blast baking together. The atmosphere was vibrant and collaborative, truly a baker’s paradise.

While I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on the assigned recipes, a part of my mind was already buzzing with ideas for the personal recipe creation challenge that lay ahead. And then I saw it – this magnificent table, laden with an array of ingredients, practically calling my name!

My initial recipe ideas shifted half a dozen times, but the deciding factor for these cookie cups became clear the moment I spotted heavy whipping cream in the test kitchen’s well-stocked pantry. This meant one glorious thing: I could fill these delightful sugar cookie cups with rich, decadent dark chocolate ganache!
My heart truly belongs to ganache.

To give them that ultimate festive touch, I topped these cookie cups with a sprinkle of crushed candy canes. The result? They were not just ridiculously cute, but utterly delicious. Truly, truly good.

Mastering Presentation: The Art of Food Photography
After our productive time in the test kitchens, we reunited with the other group for a wonderful lunch, then switched places. While I’ll delve deeper into the fascinating world of Pillsbury’s photography studios in a future post, one invaluable lesson I learned there immediately resonated with me: the importance of the “horizon of your food.” This concept emphasizes creating visual depth with highs and lows, rather than a flat, straight line across your culinary creations. It’s about making the food dynamic and inviting to the eye.
When I returned home and looked at my sweet little cookie cups, I realized they needed more visual interest, more “movement.” So, I decided to add a festive Candy Cane Hershey’s Kiss to the top of each. It proved to be a very wise choice, if I do say so myself, adding not just charm but another layer of peppermint chocolate goodness.

- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 48 Candy Cane Hershey’s Kisses
- 4 candy canes, crushed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Coat a mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine cookie dough and all-purpose flour. Knead together until well blended.
- Shape dough into one-inch balls. Press cookie dough into the bottom and up the sides of each muffin cup, forming a cup shape.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are just starting to turn golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let cool for at least ten minutes before gently twisting to remove from the pan. Place on a wire rack to cool completely.
- Place chopped chocolate in a medium bowl.
- Heat heavy whipping cream in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring the cream just to a simmer and pour over the chopped chocolate. Whisk until smooth and glossy.
- Stir in vanilla extract.
- Let the ganache cool slightly to thicken before spooning into the cooled cookie cups.
- Let cookie cups sit for an additional 10 minutes for the ganache to set slightly, then top each with a Hershey’s Kiss and sprinkle crushed candy canes on top for a delightful finish.
Notes
If you can’t find the seasonal peppermint sugar cookie dough, you can substitute it with two (16.5 oz) rolls of plain sugar cookie dough. To achieve that signature peppermint flavor, you’ll need to add 1/2 cup of Andes Peppermint Baking Chips or an equal amount of finely crushed candy canes to the plain dough. For an even stronger minty kick, you could also add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract if chips or candy canes are unavailable.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Experience

Even now, I sometimes question if the entire trip was a dream. It felt almost too good to be true, a perfect blend of learning, creativity, and heartwarming connections. I had an absolutely incredible time, and my already high regard for Pillsbury and General Mills has grown infinitely. Witnessing firsthand what a truly wonderful company it is, and experiencing the genuine warmth and dedication of its employees, was truly inspiring. From the moment my flight was booked until the second I departed, I was treated with exceptional hospitality, making me feel like royalty.
It was bittersweet to leave the vibrant energy of Pillsbury’s headquarters, but the thought of reuniting with my boys made the journey home incredibly sweet. This experience has not only enriched my baking repertoire but also deepened my appreciation for the passion that goes into creating beloved brands.

And so, here it is: my final peppermint recipe of the season. After indulging in all things minty and chocolatey, I’m ready to return to my beloved peanut butter and chocolate combinations. But these Dark Chocolate Peppermint Sugar Cookie Cups will forever hold a special place in my holiday baking traditions.
