My Enduring Love Affair with Reese's

It feels like an eternity since I last dedicated a post to my all-time favorite candy: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! The truth is, any recipe I create that features Reese's tends to vanish at an astonishing rate – often before I even have a chance to properly photograph it. The life of a food blogger, especially one obsessed with peanut butter and chocolate, is truly a labor of love!

I had every intention of sharing these little cuties with you before I embarked on my recent vacation. However, as often happens, life intervened. Between managing a never-ending pile of laundry, searching for missing shoes, and battling complete exhaustion, the days slipped away. But I'm back now, refreshed and much happier, even if the daily chaos remains! And I’m thrilled to finally bring you this fun and simple recipe that celebrates the iconic Reese's flavor.

Why Reese's Turkeys are a Must-Have

As many of you know, my culinary adventures often revolve around everything Reese's. They are, without a doubt, my favorite candy ever. Whether it's cookies, bars, cheesecake, trifles, or even bread – if it has Reese's, I'm making it! And these festive Reese's Turkeys are truly a standout. What makes them even more special is that they allow us to savor three distinct types of Reese's candy in one utterly charming and delightful treat.

Creating these turkeys is not just about taste; it's about crafting a memorable holiday experience. The combination of classic Reese's Peanut Butter Cups forming the body, paired with the unique texture and flavor of Reese's Dark Miniatures for the head, makes for a complex yet perfectly balanced bite. Then, the vibrant Reese's Pieces add a playful crunch and a pop of color that truly brings these little turkeys to life.

The Secret Behind Perfect Reese's Turkeys: Ingredient Choices

You might have noticed that I opted for Reese’s Dark Miniatures to form the turkey’s head, and there are two key reasons for this deliberate choice. Firstly, I love the subtle yet distinct color contrast they provide between the dark chocolate head and the lighter, classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup body. This visual difference adds depth and character to each individual turkey, making them even more appealing on your dessert spread.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly for crafting purposes, Reese’s Dark Miniatures tend to unwrap far more cleanly than their milk chocolate counterparts. When you’re aiming for a pristine candy for assembly, avoiding those tiny bits of chocolate residue that often cling to wrappers is crucial. This makes the assembly process smoother and ensures each turkey looks picture-perfect. Of course, I'm a firm believer that one of life's simple pleasures is licking every last sweet trace from a Reese's wrapper! However, for these specific edible crafts, having the candy intact is essential for a polished finish.

Bringing Your Turkeys to Life: Candy Eyes and Chocolate Glue

In the past, I used to create these delightful turkeys using yellow Reese’s Pieces for the eyes. While this method still works in a pinch, I must admit, the turkeys did look a little "cray cray" with their all-candy eyes! Ever since I discovered those adorable little candy eyes readily available in the baking aisle (my local Target always seems to have them!), I've made sure to keep them stocked. They are a game-changer for adding personality to all sorts of fun food creations, and these Reese's Turkeys are no exception.

The eyes, the small orange Reese's Pieces for the nose, and the colorful "feathers" are all securely attached using a dab of melted chocolate, which I affectionately refer to as "chocolate glue." This simple technique ensures that all the components stay firmly in place, even when little hands are eager to pick them up. The best part? Every single element of these sweet birds is entirely edible, making them a 99.9% Reese's masterpiece – exactly how a Reese's lover like myself prefers it!

This recipe is not only incredibly easy but also a fantastic activity for kids during the busy Thanksgiving season. They can help unwrap the candies, arrange the Reese's Pieces for the feathers, and even carefully place the candy eyes. It's a wonderful way to involve them in holiday preparations without requiring any oven time or complicated steps.

Ingredients

  • 8 full-size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • 8 Reese’s Dark Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures
  • 48 Reese’s Pieces (assorted colors for "feathers," plus orange for noses)
  • 16 candy eyes
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for melting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Candies: Carefully unwrap all the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Reese’s Dark Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures, and have your Reese’s Pieces and candy eyes ready. Arrange them on a clean, flat surface, such as a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, for easy assembly.
  2. Melt Chocolate: Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on medium power for 15-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval. Continue until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth, taking care not to overheat it, which can cause it to seize.
  3. Create Chocolate "Glue": Once melted, transfer the smooth chocolate into a small plastic ziploc bag. Snip a very tiny corner off the bag to create a fine piping tool. This will allow for precise application of your "chocolate glue."
  4. Assemble Body and Head: Take one Reese’s Dark Miniature (the head) and pipe a small dot of melted chocolate onto its flat base. Press this firmly onto the far edge of the top of a full-size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (the body). Hold for a few seconds to ensure it adheres properly. Repeat for all 8 turkeys.
  5. Add Eyes: Pipe two tiny dots of melted chocolate onto the back of two candy eyes. Carefully place these on the face of the Reese’s Dark Miniature (the head) to create the turkey’s eyes. Allow a moment for the chocolate to set.
  6. Create the Nose: Select an orange Reese’s Piece. Pipe a small amount of melted chocolate onto one side of the Reese’s Piece. Affix this to the center of the Reese’s Dark Miniature, just below the candy eyes, to form the turkey’s beak or nose.
  7. Attach Feathers: For the vibrant tail feathers, pipe a small dot of melted chocolate onto the back of five individual Reese’s Pieces. Arrange these in an arc along the top edge of the full-size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, behind the "head." You can mix and match colors for a more playful look.
  8. Allow to Set: Once all the components are attached, let the finished Reese’s Turkeys sit undisturbed at room temperature, or in the refrigerator for quicker setting, until the melted chocolate is completely firm. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Once the chocolate has fully set, your adorable Reese's Turkeys are ready to be displayed and devoured! These are perfect for a festive Thanksgiving dessert table, as party favors, or simply as a fun treat for the family.
