Researchers resort to unconventional methods like wastewater surveillance, covering 40% of the US population, to gauge Covid trends. However, without the CDC’s traditional tracking, interpreting the data becomes challenging. The absence of comprehensive testing and tracing poses a significant hurdle in understanding the true extent of the current wave.
Perfect Storm with RSV and Flu
Complicating matters, the surge aligns with the seasonal spread of RSV and flu. The CDC’s health alert on December 14 underscores the urgency for flu, Covid, and RSV vaccinations to prevent overwhelming hospitals. With overlapping infections, the risk of severe illness escalates, underscoring the importance of proactive vaccination and precautions.
The efficacy of vaccinations, especially the 2023–2024 booster tailored for XBB.1.5, remains a point of discussion. Over 80% of the US population has yet to receive the updated booster, posing a risk to community health. The challenge lies in convincing low-risk individuals of the collective responsibility in protecting at-risk populations.

The 2023–2024 booster, while not a panacea, offers some defense against JN.1. However, the lack of public health messaging and updated vaccine requirements results in widespread ignorance.
